So what is PEPP?
Dealing with a critically ill paediatric patient is possibly the most stressful part of the general practitioner or ambulance staff call. Even in a noncritical setting, assessing a paediatric patient presents unique challenges.
With only 10% of Prehospital calls for medical assistance involving children, and only 1 in 100 dealing with critical paediatric patients, the skills to answer these questions in the first few seconds on-scene can be difficult?
1 How sick is this child?
2 How quickly do I need to act?
3 What is this child’s physiological problem?
PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual program with:
• case-based lectures
• live action videos (very good)
• hands-on skill stations
• small group scenarios
PEPP Skill stations
The PEPP Skill Stations are an important part of helping students practice the hands-on aspects of what they have learned by reading the Student Manual, listening to the lectures, and watching the PEPP videos.
Skill Stations provide an opportunity to handle the equipment, to size the equipment, and to perform the skill under direct supervision.
Small Group Scenarios
The scenarios will help students apply information from all aspects of the PEPP Course
About the Course
Case-Based Lectures
The PEPP lectures cover the most important points that need to be emphasized. This is done through the use of case studies. The lectures cover:
• Child Development:
• Applying the Paediatric Assessment Triangle
• Respiratory Emergencies
• Cardiovascular Emergencies
• Rhythm recognition and treatment algorithms
• Medical Emergencies
• Trauma
• Children with Special Healthcare
• Child Maltreatment
Live Action Videos
Containing real-life footage from the field, emergency departments, and operating rooms, these videos illustrate hands-on skill covered in the PEPP Course.
Video includes:
• Introduction
• Using the Paediatric Assessment Triangle
• Airway Adjuncts
• Bag-Valve-Mask Ventilation
• Spinal Immobilization
• Airway Obstruction/Foreign Body Removal
• Endotracheal Intubation
• Confirmation of ETT Placement
• Tracheostomy Management
• Intraosseous Needle Insertion
• Intravenous Access
• Intraosseous Infusion
PEPP is a dynamic educational tool designed to give Prehospital professionals the education, skills, and more importantly the confidence they need to deal effectively in the treatment of paediatric patients.
